I was yesterday in Helsinki (Helsingfors) in Finland at #m11i, Media 2011 information: Digital spår symposium organised by Brages Pressarkiv together with YLE The Finnish Broadcasting Company, KSF Media and the Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki. My own presentation was about information seeking and source criticism.

The social in social media is about to become meaningful?
Submitted by Isto Huvila on Thu, 08/25/2011 - 14:38Several speakers at the ongoing Information Science and Social Media -- International Conference (ISSOME2011) (I am organising together with my colleagues at Åbo Akademi University) have made interesting implicit and explicit references to the notion of 'social' that are rather different from the earlier rather fuzzy references to the concept in this kind of a venue.

The aim of the first ISSOME conference is to address new modes of information behaviour in different contexts focusing the effects of social media and technologies in the interactive web. The change process is not always straight forward and we need to underline what is really changing and what is only a trend. The conference will discuss skills needed to manage the new information platform and how to develop needed competencies in the information society.
Virtual worlds and Social media
About to conquer a virtual world? Starting a successful business or other activity in virtual worlds requires special knowledge on how virtual worlds work, who are involved, what are the prospects and benefits, and what are the keys to succeed. I have conducted research on virtual worlds and virtual realities, their use and usability since late 1990's in education and other organisational contexts, awarded a PhD.
