The first ever ASIS&T European Workshop!

The first ever ASIS&T European Workshop was held in the beginning of June in Cork, Ireland. The event was kindly hosted by Cathal Hoare (chair of the European Student Chapter) together with his colleagues Adrian, Lisa and Margot from the Department of Computer Science at the University College Cork. Workshop was highly successful gathering around 30 participants from around the Europe to discuss research and especially doing the really important stuff, networking.

Diane Sonnenwald (UCD) held an  interesting keynote in which she reviewed her earlier and on-going research on the premises of adapting yet unimplemented technology to various contexts from emergence health care to policing. Her theory seems to present a very useful starting point for integrating information science research to development new information systems and infrastructures.

Otherwise the programme ranged from information retrieval systems to tagging, mobile cultural heritage applications, knowledge organisation to social media. The proceedings of the workshop will be available later in the ASIS&T Digital Library.

Archaeology and Archaeological Information in the Digital Society shows how the digitization of archaeological information, tools and workflows, and their interplay with both old and new non-digital practices throughout the archaeological information process, affect the outcomes of archaeological work, and in the end, our general understanding of the human past.
